Meet your ranchers

Bud and Kim Sloan are the guardians of this family owned ranch, dedicated to raising the highest quality beef cattle for their local community. Their commitment to sustainable farming practices emphasizes animal welfare and environmental stewardship.

At the forefront of this operation is Bud Sloan, a dedicated third-generation cow-calf producer and a practicing veterinarian since 1978. He is supported by his partner and wife of two decades, Kim Sloan, a skilled horse & cattlewoman with a 30-year nursing career behind her. Together, Bud and Kim combine their extensive medical knowledge and deep appreciation for the land and lifestyle, making them an ideal duo for tending to their herd.

Sloan Ranch has been a vibrant part of Ventura County since 1947, having relocated from Los Angeles County, where it was originally founded in 1894 by Bud's grandfather, R.R. Sloan. The ranch spans over 4,300 acres of open space rangeland, which has historical roots dating back to the Spanish land grant.

The Sloans recognize the significant value that agriculture contributes to the region, as demonstrated by their remarkable involvement in the industry and their commitment to ensuring that ranching remains a vital part of Ventura County for generations to come.

Bud completed a two-year term as Vice-President of the California Cattlemen’s Association. He has held the position of President for the Ventura County Cattlemen’s Association and has served as Vice-President twice, including his current role on the Board of Directors along with Kim. For over fifteen years, Bud has been a member of the Department of Food & Agriculture Cattle Disease Taskforce, and since 2002, he has been the Chairman and Vice-Chair of the Cattle Health Committee at CCA. Both Bud and Kim are engaged members of the California Cattlemen Association. They frequently participate in informative conventions to share state news with their local VCCA members.

In recognition of his contributions, Bud was named Cattleman of the Year for VCCA in 2004. He also received the BEEF Annual Trailblazer Award in 2015, honoring his volunteer efforts that enhance the beef industry.

Beyond being a successful rancher and veterinarian, Bud is a proud U.S. Army veteran, having served two terms from 1967 to 1970 and again from 1992 to 1995, achieving the rank of Captain.

Ventura County Coalition of Labor, Agriculture, and Business

In 2010, Bud established the Ventura County Coalition of Labor, Agriculture and Business, a 501(c)6 non-profit membership organization formed in response to impending regulations that jeopardized the sustainability of agriculture and business in Ventura County. The organization advocates for a robust local economy and strives to maintain the quality of life in the area by collaborating with a diverse group of informed stakeholders and experts.

Under Bud's leadership as president for the past 15 years, membership has grown from 40 to nearly 1,100. CoLAB originally served as a watchdog against the county government's initiatives and the agendas of environmental and no-growth groups that threatened the county’s economy and the businesses that sustain it. Today VC CoLAB partners with various stakeholders, public agencies, and decision-makers to develop sensible solutions to complex and excessive regulations. They identify and investigate issues affecting businesses, collaborate with regulatory agencies, consult experts in science, economics, engineering, and law, testify at public meetings, and mobilize stakeholders.
